Students at Lord Baltimore Elementary School in Ocean View collected 2,900 non-perishable items during a recent food drive to assist needy families in the area.

Organized by school counselor Theresa O’Shields, the food drive asked students to collect cans and other non-perishable items during a five-day period in November. Students and staff then sorted the items and prepared boxes for 18 needy families. Each family received a turkey and about a week’s worth of food. In addition, the school donated about a dozen cases of non-perishable items to the IRSD Parent Center Food Pantry at the G.W. Carver Center in Frankford.

LB school safety monitor Barry Dean sponsored a pizza party for the classroom that collected the most food. The honor went to Mary Kreger’s fifth-grade class, which collected 222 items.

During the past four years, Lord Baltimore’s annual food drive has collected and donated more than 9,500 non-perishable food items. The school has supported 72 local families with complete Thanksgiving dinners and other food items.
