Driver Education Information

In accordance with Gov. Carney’s Executive Order of July 24, the Indian River School District is now permitted to provide behind-the-wheel instruction for driver education.

The Delaware Department of Health has issued a set of safety protocols that must be followed for behind-the-wheel instruction. Those protocols are as follows:

• No more than two students (one driver and one observer) and an instructor may be in the car together.
• Everyone in the car must wear cloth face coverings in accordance with the State of Emergency Order.
• Individuals should wash their hands before getting into the car and after getting out (or use hand sanitizer if handwashing facilities are not available).
• Students and instructors must stay home when sick or if they have been exposed to COVID-19.
• All students will have their temperature taken prior to entering the vehicle.
• Individuals in higher-risk groups, such as those with underlying health conditions or who are over 65 years of age, should not participate.
• To the extent practicable, instructors should maintain air flow in the car by leaving the windows open as much as possible.
• Individuals should maintain social distancing of at least six feet when not in the car.
• Cars and frequently touched surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected between each student driver using the CDC’s cleaning and disinfecting guidance.

Driver education instructors will contact students directly to schedule behind-the-wheel driving instruction. The district will also continue to utilize the driving range at Sussex Central High School for some driving activities.
