For the fourth consecutive year, Sussex Central High School has been named a State Champion in Sportsmanship by the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association.

The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association [DIAA] offers an annual statewide competition in sportsmanship. The member schools compete against a set of ten standards that measure the school community’s commitment to the educational nature of interscholastic athletics. The process is demanding and involves the total school community. Member schools submit a portfolio that is judged by the Sportsmanship Committee to determine if each school has successfully met the standards.
The evaluations of this year’s applications are complete and the DIAA Sportsmanship Committee is extremely pleased to announce the 2016 – 2017 DIAA State Champions in Sportsmanship. Twenty-four member schools applied for the award this year and twenty-two were judged as winners. Thirty-four different member schools have now won this award at least once in the twenty-one year history of the award.

“All of these schools are led by energetic and innovative Sportsmanship Committees that are constantly looking for new ways to promote sportsmanship”, said DIAA Executive Director Tommie Neubauer. “They truly embrace the philosophy that sportsmanship is not just something you talk about, but a way of life for all student-athletes and team members that is demonstrated by your behavior and actions. This belief is an essential component of education based athletics.”
